This brief catechism (as Father Hardon reveals to us) is meant to synthesize the teaching of Pope John Paul II’s historic document, Veritas Splendor, on the relation of the Christian faith and Christian morality.

Faith identifies what we’re to believe with our minds. Morality identifies what we are to choose with our will.  As the Encyclical is at pains to point out, there cannot be any Christian morality unless it is based on Christian truth. Hence, the title of the document, “The Splendor of Truth.”

“What the Vicar of Christ is at pains to point out is that modern man has lost his hold on the truth. As a result, he goes off in search of an illusory freedom apart from truth. No wonder he is so unhappy”
